About the Urban Craftsman Hardwood Jewelry Chest
Handmade in Illinois, the Urban Craftsman Jewelry Chest is handcrafted with heirloom-quality hardwoods. The box is constructed of solid sapele wood with contrasting spalted maple handles. A single specimen of sapele is used to assure perfect color and matching wood grains, while hidden wooden key segments are added to each mitered corner to add strength and durability.
The craftsman-style lid is created with a single madrone burl inlay, with a centralized spalted maple accent, all framed with dark wenge wood.
Within the chest, you'll find 4 rows of felt ring holders, brass necklace pegs (with built-in elastic pouch to protect pendants) and felt-lined rows for watches or bracelets. Two lower drawers provide more storage, each with "stops" to prevent delicate items from falling out. Within both drawers are divided felt-lined areas for bracelets, brooches and more. Each wooden division may be removed for easy cleaning or to make room for larger items. No two people have the same assortment of jewelry items, so the box easily adjusts to fit your personal collection.
Wood details : Each box is constructed of all-natural hand-polished sustainable hardwoods and provided with a clear oil finish to protect against scratches and moisture. All coloring is natural - stains are not used. The following woods are the primary types used in the creation of this chest:
- Sapele : Frequently used in cabinetry and the production of musical instruments, sapele is native to Africa. It is very similar to mahogany with a lighter reddish-orange tint. Although more abundant than mahogany, sapele is selectively harvested to promote sustainable farming.
- Madrone : A member of the hardwood arbutus trees, madrone is a sustainable wood native to the Pacific areas of the US and Canada, It is very strong with a fine grain, with a light reddish-orange-brown color. Burls (deformed growth, sought after for the unique grain pattern) readily occurs with madrone.
- Spalted Maple : Maple is a strong hardwood native to North America with a creamy color. Spalting is a coloration of the maple caused naturally by fungi. The unique coloration pattern is sought after by woodworkers.
- Wenge-wood : A non-endangered African hardwood with a dark, bold color. Due to the high density and strength of wenge-wood, it is suitable for the framing and feet of this chest.
