About the 'San Cristobal' Retablo Plaque

Made by hand in New Mexico, this retablo plaque honors San Cristobal (Saint Christopher). An original design by the artist, her art print is decoupaged upon handcarved pine wood in traditional form. The reverse side includes a hole for hanging on the wall and a story of the saint's life.

San Cristobal (Saint Christopher) was a tall 7-1/2-feet tall man who vowed to serve the greatest king. The first king he served was reputed as the best possible. However, upon seeing the king cower at the mention of the devil, Christopher sought to serve the devil. When he learned that the devil had a fear of a local hermit, Christopher was then drawn to the service of the hermit, who instructed him in the Christian faith. In order to please Christ, Christopher would help the hermit ferry travelers daily across a nearby river. One day, a child came to cross. While crossing with the child on his shoulder, a storm arose, the river swole, and the child grew very heavy in weight. It was with extreme exertion that Christopher safely delivered the child to the other side. When asked, the child revealed himself as Christ and said "You have now carried the weight of the world upon your shoulders". St Christopher is recognized as the patron saint of travelers, transportation, truck drivers, and mariners.
