Made by hand in New Mexico, this retablo plaque honors St Bernadette. An original design by the artist, her art print is decoupaged upon handcarved pine wood in traditional form. The reverse side includes a hole for hanging on the wall and a story of the saint's life.

Saint Bernadette was born in 1844 in Lourdes, France to a loving but poor family. She suffered with asthma and frailty. At fourteen, while collecting firewood, the Virgin Mary appeared to her. It would be the first of 18 visitations at the same site. Though many in the town supported Bernadette's claims, others were suspicious, requiring her to undergo medical testing. As a sign, the Immaculate Conception made an eternal spring come forth. Since that time, Lourdes has become an important site for religious pilgrimage and many visit the spring for its healing properties. Bernadette spend her life as a humble nun before her death at the age of 35. St Bernadette is recognized as the patron saint of the sick and poor, as well as those people ridiculed for their piety. In her words, 'I shall spend every moment loving. One who does not love does not notice her trials; or perhaps more accurately, she is able to love them'.
