About the 'Joseph of Cupertino' Retablo Plaque

Long a popular folk-art form in colonial Spanish and Mexican culture, retablos are devotional paintings depicting divine icons and symbols, particularly Catholic patron saints. Chosen as representations and guardians of particular occupations and life situations, patron saints are often turned to in times of need or to express gratitude for a blessing. Displayed in homes to honor the saint or given as gifts of fortune and inspiration, retablos reflect a beloved historical tradition and cultural artistry.

Made by hand in New Mexico, this retablo plaque honors Saint Joseph of Cupertino. An original design by the artist, her art print is decoupaged upon handcarved pine wood in traditional form. The reverse side includes a hole for hanging and a story of the saint's life.

Born in 1603 and raised by his widowed mother, Joseph was a poor student who stared into the air during studies. He strived to become a monk, but due to learning disabilities, he was declined by several orders. Eventually, Joseph was accepted by The Franciscans in 1630. While helping with a procession, Joseph suddenly soared into the sky and hovered. He soon began to soar upon hearing a choir or seeing a cross. Disliked for his flights and his healing rituals for people without charging, the monks confined Joseph to the monastary out of sight of the public. He became closer to his Lord and grew in wisdom despite his learning disability. Famous for his miracles and respected for his humble and devout disposition, he had a large following by the time of his death in 1664.

Canonized in 1781, St Joseph of Cupertino is recognized as the patron saint of aviators, air travel, and those with learning disabilities. His feast day is celebrated on September 18th.
