About the 'St Hildegard' Retablo Plaque
Long a popular folk art form in colonial Spanish and Mexican culture, retablos are devotional paintings depicting divine icons and symbols, particularly Catholic patron saints. Chosen as representations and guardians of particular occupations and life situations, patron saints are often turned to in times of need or to express gratitude for a blessing. Displayed in homes to honor the saint or given as gifts of fortune and inspiration, retablos reflect a beloved historical tradition and cultural artistry.
Made by hand in New Mexico, this retablo plaque honors St Hildegard von Bingen, mystic, writer, composer, visionary, an philosopher. An original design by the artist, her art print is decoupaged upon carved pine wood in traditional form. The reverse side includes a hole for hanging and a story of the saint's life.
St Hildegard von Bingen was born to German nobility in 1098. Sickly from birth, she began having visions at age 3. At age 8, she was enclosed with Blessed Jutta, a Benedictine nun who educated Hildegard for 10 years. At age 18, Hildegard became a Benedictine nun as well. Instructed by God to write down her visions, it took Hildegard 10 years to complete 'Scivias' (Know the Way) and would later also write 'Book of the Merits of Life and Book of Divine Works'. Hildegard also became a composer, whose works of music are still played today. Building upon these achievements, Hildegard also supervised the creation of illuminated manuscripts and authored botanic and medicinal works. She is considered the founder of the study of natural history in Germany. Some of St Hildegard von Bingen's quotes include:
"Humanity, tak a good look at yourself. Inside, you've got heaven and earth, and all creation. You're a world - everything is hidden in you"
"Glace at the sun. See the moon and the stars. Gaze a the beauty of the Earth's greenings. Now, think: what delight God gives to humankind with all these things. All nature is at the disposal of humankind, We are to work with it. For without it, we cannot survive."
