About the 'St John of the Cross' Retablo Plaque

Long a popular folk art form in colonial Spanish and Mexican culture, retablos are devotional paintings depicting divine icons and symbols, particularly Catholic patron saints. Chosen as representations and guardians of particular occupations and life situations, patron saints are often turned to in times of need or to express gratitude for a blessing. Displayed in homes to honor the saint or given as gifts of fortune and inspiration, retablos reflect a beloved historical tradition and cultural artistry.

Made by hand in New Mexico, this retablo plaque honors Saint John of the Cross. An original design by the artist, her art print is decoupaged upon hand-carved pine wood in traditional form. The reverse side includes a hole for hanging and a story of the saint's life.

Born Juan de Yepes y Alvarez in Spain in 1542, he would become a spiritual mystic and great poet remembered for his devout writings and spiritual guidance. John was a priest in the Carmelite order and became a friend to Teresa of Avila. John would help Teresa of Avila reform the Carmelite order, restoring traditional poverty and prayer. However, revolting members of the order imprisoned John for these imposed reforms. He was kept for 9 months in a tiny cell where he was regularly beaten. During this time, John turned inward, where a profound communion with spirit took place. With very little light, he would write some of his greatest works of poetry, including 'Dark Night of the Soul'. His writings are still revered today and St John of the Cross is recognized as the patron saint of poets and poetry.
